Commercial Pest Control Case Reviews
Rat elimination from a zoological theme park
In the late 1990’s Varment Guard was awarded the pest control contract for a large metropolitan zoological park; in large part, to address a severe rat infestation that the previous pest control company was unable to quell. Immediately, experienced
Varment Guard managers and technicians implemented a complex integrated rodent
management program under the direct supervision of the company technical director.
The resident rat population was eliminated within a few months of intensive service performed under the purview of park animal keepers and veterinarians.
To date Varment Guard pest control service maintains a highly innovative and successful integrated pest control program, targeting rodents, cockroaches, ants, stinging insects, mosquitoes and nuisance wildlife at this zoological park with the trust and appreciation of the park administrators and staff.
Phorid fly elimination from a university department of anatomy morgue
Varment Guard Pest Control Service was called upon to address an infestation of phorid flies in the
department of anatomy morgue associated with the medical school of a large, land
grant university. The phorid flies were breeding in several cadavers and preserved
human body parts being used for teaching. Flies were moving outward from the
morgue and making their way into adjacent buildings by way of ventilation ducts and
extensive service tunnels connecting the buildings.
Varment Guard’s technical director solved the problem by treating the cadavers with a citrus-based insecticidal cleaner combined with an insect growth regulator.
Adult flies in the adjacent buildings were drawn to jar traps baited with an attractant.
Periodically, cadavers in this morgue are treated in order to prevent a resurgent infestation of phorid flies.
Cockroach elimination from a hospital kitchen
Varment Guard Pest Control was challenged with a severe infestation of both American and
German cockroaches in the kitchen and dishwashing areas of a major hospital which
had been serviced unsuccessfully by another pest control company for
years. The cockroaches were deeply entrenched in wall and ceiling voids as well as sub-slab
cavities.
Many evening hours of dedicated intensive service were required to control
this infestation. The complete cooperation of kitchen staff and hospital maintenance personnel was enlisted in order to achieve the desired results.
Nuisance bird elimination from a municipal event complex
A new municipal event complex became a favored roosting and nesting site of pigeons, while still under construction. Varment Guard wildlife
management specialists were called upon to prevent nuisance birds from alighting and
nesting on the ornate structural elements of the building.
A team of experienced technicians worked under difficult conditions to install both a complex shock track system and extensive exclusionary netting
on the upper exterior structural elements of the building. The completed work
needed to be both aesthetic (artistically-installed so as to escape notice by
visitors and pedestrians below) and effective in rebuffing nuisance birds. The resulting installations proved to be just that.
Termite colony elimination at a hospital
When termites were found to be infesting a large metropolitan hospital,
Varment Guard was awarded the contract to install the Sentricon Colony
Elimination System around the hospital because of 1) this method’s excellent
track record for achieving the desired results, 2) its non-intrusive and low-risk
method of installation and mode of action, and 3) Varment Guard’s reputation
for thoroughness and professionalism.
Within several months the termite colony was eliminated and the treatment
program was transferred to a termite monitoring program as part of an ongoing
protective strategy against the recurrence of termites invading from surrounding
landscaping.
Groundhog population reduction at major airport
Groundhogs had populated the grassy areas adjacent to the runways of
a major international airport to the point that these animals posed a risk to the
aircraft as they took off and landed. Varment Guard wildlife specialists were called upon to deplete the
groundhog population to a level considered non-threatening to airport operation.
After a few weeks of intensive trapping and permit-secured use of firearms, the pest problem was under control and runway safety was restored.
